The Journey
My library journey includes many legs and I am grateful for each one. The people I've worked with, especially the children and their families, are much of the reason being a Librarian is so gratifying for me. Many co-workers have turned into forever friends.
When you are excited and look forward to going to work each day, well, you never have to work a day in your life!
Bluffton Public Library
My first library position was with the Bluffton Public Library. An accident of sorts. Or, as i prefer to say, divine intervention. My second day on the job I attended a conference at the Mazza Gallery in Findlay Ohio where I met Denise Fleming and watched her create art using her paper collage process. I. Was. Hooked. I went home that day knowing I had found my perfect professional niche, forever changed.
My title there was Youth Services Coordinator, the first one for that library. A paraprofessional position, I was allowed the opportunity to be the children's department of the library. I created and implemented programs for children, managed the collection including ordering books. Did I say how much I love books? I organized and implemented my first Summer Reading Program there. Believe it or not, we had sleepovers in the library! One of the prize drawings children could enter into for completing the program was a library sleepover. They brought sleeping bags and flashlights of course, for reading after the lights went out. Literally, they slept in the stacks, between the library bookshelves. Best. Times. Ever!
In an environment that made me feel secure, important, and more than competent, I learned so very much in my position there, and I have the person who was the director at the time to thank for much of it. One of those people who I am quite sure was carefully selected to be placed on my path. I am grateful for that time and the people I worked with there. And the families and children. The years I spent there connected me to the families who patronized the Bluffton Public Library, some of the very best people on this planet. In a community which I called home for most of my life. It is a part of who I am. me lives there forever.
Bluffton Elementary School Library
Oh my goodness, the fun that was had here! First, the background noise. The library windows open out onto the playground. In warm weather I would open the windows and hear the most delightful sound on the planet, children laughing, at play. And being the child at heart human that I am, I regularly ate lunch in the cafeteria, at the tables with the kids. It was a contest of course, every day, to see which table could convince me to sit with them. I loved it. Just chatting with them, encouraging them to eat their lunch, eat their veggies, drink their milk. We had a blast.
So many amazing experiences were had there. My first author visits took place, Ralph Massiello, Keith Baker, Brian P. Cleary, Denise Brunkus. To this day, it amazes me, the humility, generoisity and overall kind spirit of the children's authors and illustrators I have met.
So many devoted, loving educators there! The love they give every day is astounding. Again, some of the very best people I've ever worked with, I learn so much from good people.
Lima Public Library
I started as a Shelver at the Lima Public Library, working part time around a school year schedule. I did many different things there and it was my launch pad to graduate school. I knew working there that I wanted to make that commitment to the profession. I met many great people while I was there and will always appreciate the opportunities I was afforded during that time.
Lane Road Branch, Upper Arlington Library
My Columbus adventures began here. I was laid off from the Lima Public Library in early 2009, just as the economy started a downward spiral. I had enrolled in graduate school in Columbus so found part time work there. It was a bumpy journey in a few ways, but determination is a pretty powerful vehicle. A great system, more fabulous librarians and library professionals. In a fantastic neck of the woods. It could have easily been home for me had it been meant to be. I was a part time library clerk there, in a super busy branch. Learning happened on the fly for sure!
Mansfield Richland Public Library
When I think of landing a dream job, this was pretty much it. So many unexpected reasons to love Mansfield Ohio! And my work, so much fun. With one of my most inspirational, dedicated, professional supervisors ever! A few highlights of my work there include visiting a Spanish Immersion school. English speaking students start kindergarten there and by the end of first grade, most of the day Spanish is spoken by all. Amazing! Life is complicated though, and for reasons beyond my control, it was only meant to be for a few years. But as with all of my experiences, it was important and very worthwhile.
Barberton Public Library
Such an amazing little stand alone library! In a great location, over looking Lake Anna. Such a picture perfect location, my husband and I were married there! In the library. Overlooking a beautiful little kettle lake(which I learned is basically a glacier pothole!). A day to remember forever! All seasons are experienced. Working with three other children's librarians and professionals. I can't say enough about the Barberton Library. And the people there. So real. Connected. We held bake sales, had a relay for life team, jeans for a cause on Fridays. A fantastic place to work. Because of a deal I made myself when I decided to continue my education, I began advancing my career, moving to a bigger system with more opportunity. Not sure I would do that again. But I did it and as with all of my other library homes, the experiences and people I worked with there, shaped who I am. What I think. And believe. I am a lucky librarian!
Stark Library
My current home sweet home! I started at the Jackson Branch Library while they were in a transitional storefront location. With no programming room. I did storytimes in the public service area. Now keep in mind, I sing, dance, do many silly things in storytime. And that really is not my kind of thing, to attract the attention of GROWN UPS! But I did it. I will never forget noticing adults who were watching us who obviously had no children with them. Made me a little uncomfortable until a man approached me one day after storytime. Said he had no idea we did such a thing here, he was going to tell his daughter. She and her children became regulars. As did so many families who were just stopping in to get books but stayed for fun. I said I didn't ever want to do storytime behind closed doors again! In our new branch, which is amazing, there is a full glass wall, so people can see what we're doing, join in the fun. Without having to listen to my less than glorious singing voice! Did I say I love my job?
